What We Do

We Help You Reach New Heights

Fencing is a high-speed and high-intensity sport. A good fencer not only has great physical speed and techniques, but also strong mental skills. Acute mental training is necessary for observing subtle cues from the opponent, determining their intention, and deciding on the right strategical defense. At the same time, fencers must initiate an effective counterattack towards their opponent. These specific requirements for mental agility are one of the reasons why fencing is commonly referred to as "Physical Chess".

Markham Fencing was established to promote fencing in the Greater Toronto Area. We are dedicated to offering high-quality and customized learning to fencers at every level, from beginner to Olympian. Fencers learn sportsmanship, self-discipline, and confidence while becoming physically fit and healthy. These ideals help fencers reach their potential in many other areas of their lives.

We are proud to be the home of some world-class athletes and coaches!

Program

Raise your sword. Expand your limits.

Olympic

This program is designed for fencers qualified for World Cup or Olympics. A customized training plan developed by our experienced coaches helps athletes achieve their wildest dreams. The program is structured with extremely intensive training at our club, as well as at oversea clubs and in selected high-level competitions around the world.

Competitive

Fencers above 14 who wish to achieve high results in national and US tournaments will be admitted in our competitive program as per their competition performance. This program is high-energy, challenging, and exhilarating. Recommended training is 10 hours per week. Many fencers from this program are national high-performance fencers in Canada's junior/cadet national team.

Intermediate

Fencers with 2 years of experience (ages 12+) are admitted to our intermediate program. This program provides determined fencers with a more intense level of training from conditioning and footwork to free fencing and “handicap” bouts. Fencers are introduced to various attacks and defense techniques, as well as referee skills that help fencers to take their game to a new level.

Beginner

Fencers with at least 1 year of experience (ages 10+) or fencers who have successfully completed introductory lessons can enroll in our beginner program. This program is packed with plenty of activities to improve speed, strength, endurance, and co-ordination, while developing specific fencing skills and tactical thinking.

Introductory

Fencers who have less than 6 months of experience (or age 8+) start their journey by doing introductory private or group fencing lessons with our experienced coaches. This program prepares fencers to join our regular ongoing program safely and confidently.

Camp

Our club organizes March Break Camps, Summer Camps, and Winter Camps. These are great opportunities to advance fencers' techniques and experiences. During our previous camp events, we have invited national team and university fencing coaches from Asia, Europe, and the US.

As part of our regular programming, Markham Fencing implements the Armband system to assess skill development and progress. As fencers work towards receiving their Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Red, and Black Armbands, they learn the necessary skill sets to become successful athletes, coaches, and referees.
